Lyonchhen called on President of Bangladesh

Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay called on to H.E. Mr. Md. Abdul Hamid, President, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh today at the Taj Tashi Hotel, Thimphu.

Condemning the terror attack in the Café in Bangladesh last night, Lyonchhen said that the act was unprecedented in the history of Bangladesh and complemented the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and its security forces for quick handling of the situation. “Nowhere in the world has terror attacks been resolved this quickly and efficiently,” Lyonchhen said. Lyonchhen wore a Green Gho today to show solidarity with the people of Bangladesh.

The President shared with Lyonchhen that 6 gunmen have been killed and 13 people were rescued, amongst which 3 were foreigners – 1 Japanese and 2 Sri Lankan.

The President also shared that the relationship between Bangladesh and Bhutan dates back to 1980s. “Bhutan was the first country to recognize Bangladesh’s independence,” he said.
On trade between Bhutan and Bangladesh, Lyonchhen said that there is a need to further strengthens it, given the proximity and the current volume of trade. Lyonchhen also expressed Bhutan’s interest to export boulders and stones to Bangladesh, through the inter-governmental agreement. Due to shortages of boulders and stones in Bangladesh, quite often bricks are broken into small pieces to form aggregates for construction, this Lyonchhen said is expensive and polluting to the environment. The President said that he would suggest importing boulders and stones from Bhutan to his government. Lyonchhen and the President also discussed possibilities of transporting the goods through waterways.

Acknowledging the importance of connectivity, the President said that he is grateful to the National Assembly of Bhutan for passing the BBIN Agreement and said that he is hopeful that the National Council will also endorse it.

Lyonchhen thanked the President for visiting Bhutan despite his busy schedules and also for bringing along the family members. The President thanked Lyonchhen for showing solidarity for the terror attack in Bangladesh.
