Lyonchhen attends last day of Punakha Domche.


Every year, on the last day of Punakha Dromche, His Holiness the Je Khenpo or Venerable Dorji Lopen Rimpoche presides over the sacred ceremony of ‘serda’. ‘Serda’ is a re-enactment of an episode of war against the Tibetan invaders of the 17th century.

Pungthang Dechen Phodrang Dzong, one of the oldest Dzongs in the country, located at the confluence of Pho chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, is a historic site for Bhutan. It also sites the earthly body of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, unifier of Bhutan.

Lyonchhen meets Mr. Shahidul Islam, BIMSTEC Secretary General



Lyonchhen Dr Lotay Tshering met His Excellency Mr. Shahidul Islam, BIMSTEC Secretary General at the Gyalyong Tshogkhang on 13th February, 2019.

Lyonchhen welcomed H.E. Mr. Islam to Bhutan and highlighted the essence of BIMSTEC in its role of cooperation beyond the SAARC region.

H.E. Mr. Islam thanked Bhutan’s participation in the 4th BIMSTEC Summit held in Nepal under the leadership of Chief Justice Tshering Wangchuk, Chief Advisor to the Interim Government in August 2018.

Bhutan leads the cultural cooperation among the 14 BIMSTEC priority areas.

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional organization comprising Member States from areas of the Bay of Bengal. BIMSTEC was established on 6 June 1997 through the Bangkok Declaration.
