Lyonchhen Dr Lotay Tshering met His Excellency Mr. Shahidul Islam, BIMSTEC Secretary General at the Gyalyong Tshogkhang on 13th February, 2019.

Lyonchhen welcomed H.E. Mr. Islam to Bhutan and highlighted the essence of BIMSTEC in its role of cooperation beyond the SAARC region.

H.E. Mr. Islam thanked Bhutan’s participation in the 4th BIMSTEC Summit held in Nepal under the leadership of Chief Justice Tshering Wangchuk, Chief Advisor to the Interim Government in August 2018.

Bhutan leads the cultural cooperation among the 14 BIMSTEC priority areas.

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional organization comprising Member States from areas of the Bay of Bengal. BIMSTEC was established on 6 June 1997 through the Bangkok Declaration.

The Education Ministry has been accorded one of the highest priorities by the government with strategies to shift from summative to formative style of education; enhance teacher quality with improved facilities and services; and provide conducive environment for education.
