Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay’s visit to Australia 11th to 13th October 2016

Lyonchhen Tshering Togbay visited Australia from 11th to 13th October 2016 and is the first Prime Minister of Bhutan to visit Australia officially.

11th October 2016. Brisbane: Lyonchhen spoke at the International Water Authority (IWA) World Water Congress 2016. Lyonchhen also interacted with the Bhutanese studying and living in Brisbane and also in the evening Lyonchhen flew to Canberra and was received by the President and the members of the Australia Bhutan Association in Canberra (ABAC) at the airport.

12th October 2016. Canberra:  Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay called on to the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon. Malcolm Turnbull at the Parliament House in Canberra. The Hon. Turnbull welcomed Lyonchhen and his delegation to Australia and said that he look forward to working together with Lyonchhen towards strengthening the existing good ties between the two countries. Conveying the good wishes of His Majesty the King to the Prime Minister and people of Australia, Lyonchhen thanked the Hon Turnbull for the consistent support and assistance Australia has provided to Bhutan.

Lyonchhen also met with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon. Tony Smith; Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Julie Bishop; the Hon. Steven Ciobo, Minister for Trade and Investment; Hon Concetta Fierravanti-Wells and Minister for International Development and the Pacific.

In the evening Lyonchhen spoke about ‘Bhutan’s Transition to Democracy’ at the University of Canberra. (Please visit Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay’s official Facebook page to listen to the talk). Lyonchhen later interacted with the Bhutanese living and studying in Canberra and distributed badge of His Majesty the King, Kupar of HRH Gyalsey and the Royal Wedding Commemorative note.

Lyonchhen educated the gathering about Royal Monetary Authority’s Hard Currency Account – Remit Bhutan and encouraged them to open this account and see for themselves how it functions.  Acknowledging their hard work, Lyonchhen said, “ I am very proud of you all and I was told by the Australian leaders that Bhutanese in general are very trustworthy”

On 13th October 2013: While in Sydney Lyonchhen met with Premier Mike Baird of New South Wales (NSW) at the office of the Premier, NSW Parliament House.

An agreement to cooperate on Strengthening Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Instruction in Bhutan (“the program”) to be delivered in 2016-2018, was signed in presence of Lyonchhen and the Premier between Mr. Sonam Wangchuk, Secretary, Ministry of Labour & Human Resources, RGOB and the Hon John Barilaro, Minister for Regional Development; Minister for Skills and Minister for Small Business, Government of NSW. Lyonchhen also met Bhutanese studying and living in Sydney
