Mm. Chairperson, President of the General Assembly, Mr Secretary General, Mm. President Laura Chinchillla of Costa Rica, Excellencies, Ladies and gentlemen,

The Kingdom of Bhutan and her people are honoured by your presence.

I believe an economy is not an economy if, at the very least, it does not cause economy. It ought to promote prudent use and management of scarce resources to make life stable and secure.

Bhutan, the tiny Himalayan nation which tops Asia in the United Nations’ First World Happiness Report, convened a high level meeting on April 2 seeking to develop a new economic model based on principles of well being and happiness. Should the concept of Gross National Product be replaced by Gross National Happiness? The Prime Minister of Bhutan, Lyonchhen Jigmi Y Thinley said in his opening address at the United Nations Head Quarter in New York City that it not only should but that it must if mankind is to avoid its current unsustainable and self-destructive course.

Ambassadors of Brazil, Afghanistan and the EU in Bhutan

Senior Minister of the Royal Government of Bhutan, Lyonpo Yeshey Zimba, met with the new ambassadors of Brazil, Afghanistan and the European Union at the Gyalyong Tshogkhang today.

The three Ambassadors, who also received an audience with His Majesty the King, are in the country this week to present their credentials.

Lyonpo Yeshey Zimba welcomed the first ambassador designate of Brazil to Bhutan, H.E Carlos Sergio Sobral Duarte, and said that although formal diplomatic relations between the two nations had been established a long time ago, this visit of the first Ambassador will further strengthen the relationship. Among various other issues, the two leaders spoke on the upcoming Rio Plus 20 summit in Brazil and begin collaboration in the areas such as agriculture and hydropower. Ambassador Duarte is on a four day visit to Bhutan.
